4 Steps to Creating Healthy Balance and Boundaries

You are tired. You’ve spent the majority of your year running from one thing to the next. You have been juggling people’s expectations, ministry responsibilities, and family obligations. Each busy season runs into the next and you know that you can’t keep it up much longer. You need to create healthy balance and boundaries in life and ministry, but how to you do that? Where do you begin? Here are 4 steps to help you create a healthy rhythm so that you can continue to do what you love and not burn out.

Know What You Want

You know you lack boundaries and you need to make a change. That’s great! But what exactly does that mean? What do you want? This is a crucial foundational step. If you don’t know where you want to be you will never get there. If you know where you are headed you can make plans to help you arrive at your destination. Be clear on what you want.

Paint a Picture of What it Would Look Like

Now that you know what you want, it’s time to dream about how it would look to live in your new reality. What would your day look like? How would your calendar reflect your desires? What would you feel if you were able to travel this road? What would be possible? Dream and give a vivid description of your life and ministry with healthy balance and boundaries.

Put Your Vision into Action Steps

Ok, this is the hardest part. Here is where we need to actually DO something. Time and time again, I talk with women who know what they want, they know what it would make possible for them in their life and ministry but somehow they expect it to “just happen.” They pray, they hope but they actually don’t do anything different than they are doing now. This is a recipe for disaster. If you keep doing the same thing, you are going to get the same result. I wish there was another way, but in order to create healthy balance and boundaries you need to do the hard work of creating action steps and doing them! This is how things change…how you change, and how you actually experience what you want.

Talk to Your People

You have a clear vision and a plan. You know what you are going to do. This…is…awesome! You have made it farther than most leaders! The final step is to talk with your people. You do not do life and ministry alone. There are people around you who need to be made aware of your plans to change. Unfortunately, even if you communicate this well, chances are you will get pushback. It’s natural. Family systems theory tells us that any system, even one where people are unhealthy and need to make change for the better, fights to stay the same. They are familiar with the way things work and will inevitably try to pull you back into the role they are accustomed to you playing. If you find this happening, continue to be gracious, clear in your communication and committed to your new rhythms of life.
