Are you a person that makes new year's resolutions? Do you vow to undertake a new hobby or create a different habit? Maybe the end of the year is an opportunity for you to decide what you will NOT do in the year to come. Whether or not you announce your intentions as the confetti flies and the champagne flows, my guess is that you do have intentions for the year to come. There are things you want to do differently, and the start of a new year is a wonderful time to get focused on your priorities.
You probably also know that most of us give up on our new year's resolutions by the end of January and go back to the familiar patterns of the past. Change not only takes time but requires tons of intentionality. But soon our resolve dissipates as the daily grind takes over. Days blur into weeks, weeks into months and before we know it another year has gone by. It happens to many of us.
What if I told you that you could establish a rhythm of reflection and review that would help you be attentive to the time and energy you spent as you focus on your desires that lie ahead? There is a way to make sure your life is being leveraged to move you forward. It is by practicing a weekly review.
Weekly reviews are simple and don't take much time but they can make all the difference in the world by helping you stay focused and energized. As you reflect, you'll be able to see your progress, celebrate your wins, and make adjustments where needed. So, how do you actually do this? Here are some tips to get you started.
If you're like me you already have your 2020 calendar. Or better yet, your schedule is at your fingertips on your digital device. Take out your calendar and decide what day of the week you will do your weekly review. I like to do mine on Sunday afternoons. Then put WEEKLY REVIEW on that day every week. Set aside 30-60 minutes as you get started and make adjustments down the road so that your weekly review works for you!
Once the time comes for your weekly review, grab your calendar, any journals you use regularly, your favorite beverage and get comfy. Start by asking yourself some powerful questions. Here are some ideas:
Chances are some of your week did not go as planned. Most of the time this is the case. God's timing is different than ours. He often does the unexpected and that's ok. His plan is the most important thing, so if things changed because of His redirection, way to go following His lead! However, there are times when things get out of whack because we get distracted and busy. Our resolve falters as others place demands on us. We end up giving in to the tyranny of someone else's urgent. If this has been the case, don't beat yourself up, we've all done it. But spend some time reflecting on what you were feeling and how you might be able to handle it differently next time. Use your calendar to schedule what's important in the week to come.
If you find yourself out of sync week after week, it may be time to ask for help.
Talk with a close, trusted friend and ask them if they will be your accountability partner. Let them know your heart's desires and your plans for the week. Ask them to connect with you throughout the week to see how it's going. A quick text or phone call from someone can go a long way to keep us focused on what we say is important.
Hire a coach to help you brainstorm your next steps and schedule check-ins. It's amazing how motivated we are when we have some skin in the game and have made a financial investment. It takes our commitment to the next level.
Spending time conducting a weekly review will not only make it easier for you to keep your resolve and do the things your heart desires in the year ahead but it will also help you discern the adjustments you need to make along the way.
Next year can be different. Keep showing up for yourself and the things you value most.
