Discovering the Vision Jesus Has For You [EP:020]

Aug 25, 2022

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 MSG

Fall will soon be upon us and once it starts it feels like one big jump to the end of the year. When you get to the end of 2022, what do you want to be different for you? Who do you want to be? In this episode of the Margin Maker podcast, I take you through some of the questions I use with my clients as they create healthy rhythms and boundaries and care for their soul.

Before you make a plan of action you need to be able to see the vision Jesus has for you.

Pull out a piece of paper, a journal, or something to capture what Jesus will say to you. Get...

Planning Margin and Rhythms for the Summer [EP:012]

Jun 02, 2022

If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.

                                     -Benjamin Franklin

If you're like me, you have a vision of what you want this summer. But here's what ends up happening...time goes by. Before you know it, the summer is over and there is so much that never happened.

Planning helps you be thoughtful and intentional about the time ahead. Planning takes your vision from an idea to reality.

Here's How You Can Plan for the Season Ahead

Set aside 30 minutes to spend time with God. Put this commitment on your calendar and keep it as you would any other appointment.

Questions to Ask as You Plan Your Summer

  • God, what is your vision for me over these next few months?
  • What do you envision for my life, my family, my leadership? This can include things like your relationship with Him, your physical health, mental health, emotional...

3 Rhythms Everyone in Ministry Should Have

Feb 18, 2021

Have you been wondering what types of rhythms you should integrate into your life and leadership? Where do you even start? In this episode of the podcast, I share 3 rhythms that every person in ministry should have. These rhythms will change your life and your ministry.

Key Rhythms

  • Rest: a time to stop, sabbath, preferably weekly.
  • Review: once a week, 45-60 minutes do a review of how you've spent your time and energy. What went well? What needs to be done differently? What's coming up this coming week and how can I make the most of it?
  • Retreat: a period of 2-4 when you get away with God to survey the scene with God. What is He saying to you about the season you are in or may be entering? Listen, pray, evaluate. This form of pulling back allows you to strategically enter into the months ahead.

Have you asked yourself, "When will things go back to normal?" Me too. But honestly, I don't think we want to go back to normal. Normal was too busy. Normal left us on the edge of burnout. Lie #1: Good Leadership is Being Available 24/7

Jan 23, 2020

When I began my journey in pastoral leadership, I believed that to be a good leader, I needed to be available all of the time. I would meet people or attend meetings on my day off. I'd keep my phone on and close by so I could answer every call. I would check my email every day, sometimes late at night, just in case. When I was in my office, in the spirit of openness and transparency, I would allow anyone to come in at any time. I never wanted to be off-limits.

It was exhausting.

Being "on-call" nonstop interfered with essential ministry functions like my preparation for sermons, bible study, and meetings, it compromised my relationships and my family time, and it chipped away at my sanity. I needed space and quiet to let ideas percolate. I wanted to be able to work out and spend time with the Lord that wasn't related to my job. I needed to pick up my son from school on time and have the chance to make a healthy dinner and eat at the table like a civilized human being before getting...
